AMA Queensland wrote to Director-General of Queensland Health Dr David Rosengren recommending medicinal cannabis prescribers be limited to more senior and experienced practitioners who have completed specialist training through a medical college.

AMA Queensland, RANZCP, RACGP and the Pharmacy Guild wrote to both the federal Health Minister Mark Butler and Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls calling for more urgent action to combat the proliferation of business models focused on prescribing and dispensing medicinal cannabis, and to put the issue on the agenda for the September meeting of health ministers.

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler responded to our joint letter, stating that improving regulation of medicinal cannabis prescribing is a priority for his department and indicating the TGA would publish a public consultation to gather stakeholder input.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration is reviewing the safety and regulatory oversight of unapproved medicinal cannabis products due to concerns about high rates of prescribing, dispensing and adverse outcomes. After two years of collaboration with other health organisations to raise issues with state and federal health ministers, we have now made a formal submission to the TGA.
