QH tells trainee docs ‘thanks for coming but we don’t need you'
Editorial
In another blow to the future junior doctors of Queensland, up to 500 currently employed Registered Medical Officers (RMO’s) have been shown the door by Queensland Health.

Described as ‘the workhorses’ of the public health system by AMA Queensland President Dr Alex Markwell, the RMO’s in their final years of training now face the same uncertain fate of medical students waiting for internship places.

The trainee doctors were delivered the shocking news via email late on a recent Friday afternoon telling them "you have not been selected for a position with Queensland Health in 2013".

The news outraged AMA Federal President Dr Steve Hambleton who said home-grown junior doctors would be forced to ‘drive taxis and wash windscreens’ as we continue to import medical graduates from overseas.
AMA Queensland President Dr Alex Markwell was also quick to defend the trainee doctors,

"We've never seen anything like it in Queensland. We've got doctors and they are being told to go away," she said. "Doctors need training and do not graduate 'ready to use',” she said.

Joining the chorus of dismay is Chair of the AMA CDT (Council of Doctors in Training) Dr Will Milford and Dr Vanessa Grayson new Chair of the AMA Queensland CDT.

AMA Queensland is keen to hear from any doctors that have been affected by these changes, send us an email to membership@amaq.com.au.

We will continue to highlight these issues until a suitable resolution is reached and encourage members to provide their comments and feedback.

Let us know if you are still waiting for a Queensland Health position in 2013 at our online poll.
