Queensland Health VMO update

ASMOFQ have commenced discussions with our Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) members about the important elements of their employment. Since Senior Medical Officer (SMO) members were once again covered by Certified Agreement, the Medical Officers (Queensland Health) Certified Agreement (No. 4) 2015 (MOCA 4) from November 2015, ASMOFQ, along with representatives from the AMAQ VMO Committee, have commenced initial discussions with Queensland Health regarding the industrial framework for VMOs going into the future. At a high level, our VMO members have indicated their employment framework should contain provisions for:

  • employment security;
  • collective bargaining;
  • ability for a review of entitlements at a set period (for example, every three years);
  • consistency across all VMO groups; and
  • access to an independent mediator for dispute resolution.

In light of the feedback we have received from our VMO members, we have put to Queensland Health that a Certified Agreement would provide the optimal industrial framework for VMOs. However, before negotiations begin for any proposed Agreement, several technicalities must be ironed out. For example, a Modern Award which covers the VMO group must be established before any Collective Agreement can be implemented.

In preparation for the proposed changes, ASMOFQ has been approached by a number of members regarding audits which are being carried out at several HHSs in relation to VMO ongoing private practice costs. If your HHS is suggesting you should be translated from a VMO to a SMO position, we suggest you contact our Industrial Officers on (07) 3872 2222 or asmofq@amaq.com.au for advice on your best options.
