Important News for practices: 2009 Minimum Wage Decision

The Australian Fair Pay Commission (AFPC), which is currently the body responsible for determining the minimum wage increases, this year has decided not to increase the wage rates in pay scales for employees in the Federal system. The reason for this decision was based on the continuing economic pressure on business and employment, the increase in income low paid employees have received as a result of the federal governments stimulus package and changes to taxation laws and the fact that wages will be reviewed by Fair Work Australia (The new body responsible for minimum wage increases) in early 2010.

For those employers who are governed by the state Industrial Relations system, The Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (the body responsible for minimum wage adjustments in the state jurisdiction) handed down a decision on 21 August that deems wages or salaries prescribed by all awards for full-time adult employees shall be increased from 1 September 2009 by an additional sum of $16.20 per week in all award rates of pay.
