AMA Queensland has today commended the State Government for its decision to restructure Queensland Health services and implement procedures for the betterment of patient care in Queensland.

AMA Queensland President Dr Chris Davis said the reforms announced today by Queensland Health would ensure more direct communications between Queensland Health and clinicians working on the ground – reform the AMA has long called for in Queensland.

“The AMA has consistently called for less bureaucracy and greater clinical input in the State’s health system, and the Bligh Government is to be commended for taking an important step in ensuring more direct communication between the system and the upper echelons of Queensland Health,” Dr Davis said.

“Today’s reforms will lead to greater engagement of the clinical workforce in Queensland and this will ultimately benefit patient care.

“The reduction in bureaucracy will mean more funding can go directly back into the system where it is needed most – more beds, a reduction in waiting lists and greater investment in clinical services and research in our hospitals,” he said.

Dr Davis said the restructure would build on the reforms identified as part of the Forster Review and provided an opportunity for Queensland Health to introduce improved systems to measure and enhance its performance for patients.

“The AMA is hopeful these reforms will lead to greater accountability and transparency within Queensland Health and this in turn will lead to improved clinical services for patients who need it most throughout the State.

“Successful change needs great leadership and it is reassuring to see this reform process will be lead by the Director-General of Health Mr Mick Reid, one of Australia’s most experienced and respected health experts.

“Queensland patients and clinicians deserve to have access to a world class system that can generate world class services, teaching and research and these reforms are an important step in achieving this.

“AMA Queensland looks forward to working closely with Queensland Health to ensure these reforms allow clinicians greater ability to serve their patients and the profession,” he said.
