What is the DHAS(Q)?
The need to help impaired doctors has long been recognised both in Queensland and nationally. Doctors, dentists and pharmacists can often make difficult patients as many refuse to acknowledge their problems or seek help. This can be for a range of issues, from health or medical conditions through to stress-related illnesses and substance abuse.
It was recognised that the profession needed to take the lead in assisting colleagues. Colleagues supporting one another has proven effective in addressing some of the many issues practitioners face, not only for the immediate benefit in providing advice on seeking help, but also for the understanding that comes with speaking to a colleague who is conscious of the many demands and stresses of working as a medical or health practitioner.
Mission statement
An independent, confidential and colleague-to-colleague service to help impaired doctors, dentists, pharmacists and the students of these professions.
• The DHAS(Q) is a confidential, dedicated phone service providing support to impaired medical and health professionals and students as well as their families
• The DHAS(Q) is independent of all other medical, dental and pharmacy organisations and confidentiality in all matters is paramount
• The DHAS(Q) provides an invaluable service both to the medical and health professions and the public.
Confidentiality
• Confidentiality is paramount
• The DHAS(Q) is entirely independent of the Medical, Dental and Pharmacy Boards
• The primary focus of the DHAS(Q) is to help colleagues – the DHAS(Q) will not report impaired practitioners to the Boards in any instance.
What can DHAS(Q) do for you?
The DHAS(Q) has been established to assist practitioners in restoring their full personal, professional and social capabilities.
In the event DHAS(Q) is unable to provide assistance, alternative options will continue to be sourced to enable practitioners to function within
the community to the best of their ability and maintain their dignity.
How to seek help
A dedicated DHAS(Q) phone service is available 24-hours a day, seven days a week for medical and health practitioners in need.
This number is (07) 3833 4352.
Calls for help often come from many sources, including sick doctors, dentists and pharmacists, their families, staff and colleagues. When a call
for help is received from a person other than the impaired practitioner, extreme caution is taken by the DHAS(Q) to ensure that any interventions
remain confidential and that all concerns are looked into in full prior to a practitioner being approached for assistance.
The DHAS(Q) helpline is staffed by a panel of senior General Practitioners backed by specialists experienced in supporting colleagues
suffering from health or stress-related problems. Extreme caution is taken in all instances to maintain confidentiality.
